Psychotherapy

Persons who have been persecuted and exposed to torture or violence often suffer greatly from their experiences. At the Center ÜBERLEBEN, we offer psychotherpeutic diagnostic and treatment with specially trained interpreters in more than 40 languages.

The majority of men, women, children and adolescents, who have been severely or repeatedly traumatized by human hands, suffer from persistent trauma-related psychological disorders, such as

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Depressive disorders
  • Somatoform disorders

Typical signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are the intruding memories of what an individual has experienced. Patients suffer from nightmares and fear everything, which brings memories of their experiences or creates a feeling of emotional numbness. Often these persons live in a state of vegetative hyper-alertness.

A psychotherapeutic treatment is urgently necessary, because the basic vital functions of these persons are so restricted and are under severe psychological strain.

A purely medicational therapy without an accompanying psychotherapy is therefore an insufficient treatment solution.

Due to the process of cultural uprooting and the difficult living conditions in exile, as well as the often year-long uncertainties conerning residency rights, it is often difficult for patients to cope with the trauma they have experienced. There also exists the danger that the post-traumatic symptoms may become chronic.

Group services complete the individual therapies. If necessary, a treatment may be undertaken in combination with a general medical, physiotherapeutic or psychiatric medication therapy.
